1 August 2020|Briefing note

The First Issue of the Natural Resources in Latin America and the Caribbean Bulletin presents a joint analysis of the role of water, energy, agriculture, biodiversity and non-renewable natural resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. Which, on the one hand, are fundamental factors for controlling the crisis and, on the other, are impacted by its consequences.
This analysis results in a series of integrated proposals that will allow the countries of the region to better face this and future crises, as well as structural difficulties. Among them, the implementation of the 2030 Agenda stands out as a catalyst framework in post-pandemic economic recovery and the key participation of the State in providing guarantees regarding its water security (especially in access to water), food and energy. On the other hand, the operation of the extractive industries of non-renewable natural resources must be guaranteed in those countries where these are key to the economy. Last but not least, it is necessary to join forces to preserve the diversity and integrity of the ecosystems, as well as educating the population on the value of natural resources, which will be essential to guide the region towards recovery. Sustainable, inclusive and resilient economy.
