In his last report to the Human Rights Council, the Special Rapporteur on the issue of human rights obligations relating to the enjoyment of a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment, David R. Boyd, focused on the right to breathe clean air. He also described the negative impact of air pollution on the enjoyment of many human rights, in particular the right to life and the right to health, in particular by vulnerable groups.

Knox, emphasized the importance of the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean recently adopted on 4 March 2018 in Escazú, Costa Rica.

In his last report submitted to the United Nations General Assembly, dated 3 August 2016 (A/71/281), the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders refers to the dangers faced by the defenders to a safe and healthy environment. In view of the situation in the region, the Special Rapporteur urges negotiating parties in Latin America and the Caribbean to expedite the conclusion of the regional agreement on Principle 10.
